Cambodia - Angkor Thom Khmer Festival

On day one in Cambodia we took a Tuk Tuk to the beautiful Angkor Thom.

Luckily for us we landed in Cambodia during Khmer, the traditional New Year, which is a three day non stop celebration.
You are surrounded by loud music being blasted from speakers, food stalls filled with sugarcane juice and bbq and some of the biggest smiles you will ever see.

However the downfall to this, especially getting to Angkor Thom, was the traffic. This meant a trip that should have apparently taken us 20 minutes, took us nearly 2 hours!!! Although, even due to this extreme time delay, our original quote of $10 only went up to $12.
Tuk Tuk is definitely a cheap and effective way of getting around.

As it was our first ever trip to Cambodia, the extra Tuk Tuk time meant me saw so much more on route. From street parties, families of 4+ on one moped, to middle of the road water fights.

Before getting to Bayon we stopped off to get our tickets.
Now these are a must if you want to go up and inside the temples.
You are welcome to wander around for free, however the views we got were well worth the $20 day ticket....trust us.

When we arrived to the entrance, with very numb bums, our Tuk Tuk driver turned around and said, 'I'm not going any further, you can walk from now'. So we hopped out.

The atmosphere was like a festival, which to us is just amazing! There were food and drinks stalls, music almost everywhere, and crowds of people having a brilliant time celebrating the new year.

Just an all round incredible vibe.

Top Tips

▪️If you want to wear shorts we would reccomend you have a pair of lightweight trousers in your bag as you will be denied access into certain areas...cover those knees people!

▪️Always have a small amount of cash on you at all times, we recommend $10-$20 just in case.

▪️The heat here during the 'dry' season is insane! Ensure you find shade for a rest every so often and ALWAYS carry a big bottle of water with you! You are only looking at $1 a bottle (1.5L) so please don't take any risks, keep hydrated!!

▪️Yes, we know this is the place they filmed Tomb Raider (awesome right??), and yes, we know we all want to recreate those impressive moves....but please remember that sensible footware and watching your step is a must. These are ancient temples guys with some very unstable footpaths and steps. So please no Lara Croft moves here.

Take a look...
